What do you think, Jenny? I don't know. Jenny doesn't seem all that interested
Shaggy cows. Shaggy cows. So, I just got a special new shipment into the farm and I want to show you guys what it is cuz I'm really excited about this one. And I'm pretty sure you're going to be excited about this one, too. Would you look at that? They're even in the classic Harford Whalers colors. But I do know of some animals that are going to be very interested in these today because in today's video, we're going to be installing brushes for my shaggy cows. Can you even get remotely excited about these? No, you're much more excited about the packaging or rubbing against the camera. Yeah, I don't think these are going to make a very good cat toy.
The past 24 hours on the farm have been insanely windy and uh it hasn't been pleasant, but it looks like things are going to start to calm down a little bit today. Like you can see, the wind blew around my trash can last night. It piled up a snow drift up along this gate. Even Toby Dog and Abby Dog seem to have been hunkered down for most of the evening. And rather than stay out here, they've been inside their house back there. Okay, Abby Dog, I'm coming. Come on. Come on. Inside. Inside. Come on. Do you guys want to test this out? Do you want to check it out? See what you think of it? Not all that interesting? No. You'd rather be pet by me. What do you think, Abby? Huh? Huh? You don't know what to make of it, do you? You're not all that interested at all. But believe me, you guys, I know my cattle are going to be very interested in this.
I think to test things out this morning, we're going to start off with the boys and install one really quickly here. I think this is going to be a really good spot to install one. As you can see, they've already been rubbing up against this corner a lot. Like there's some Highland fur here. It keeps getting caught on these nails here. So, I think if I were to like install it like this, could work out pretty well. What do you guys think? Should we give it a shot? I mean, since this is where they've been scratching their fur, I'd say probably this is like the perfect height. I also know that this will be right on a corner, so it will be sturdier than if I just put it into one of the planks, which might not be into like one of the corner posts. All right, we'll put a second screw in there just to keep it nice and secure. Like, if I was cattle, I would want to rub up against this.
Now that we have the brushes up, let's call over our test subjects. Excuse me, Macho Man. Joey Raone. Come on, Macho Man. You're going to love this. I think you're going to love this at least. Come on, Macho Man. Let's go. I'm leading the way. I'm gonna give you one little treat because you love your treats and I'm gonna let you investigate this. Oh, you want more treats? Okay, here you go, guy. Oh, you want to get scratched. Well, I guess part one of our multi-stage experiment is going exceptionally well. They seem to love this thing. You know, Macho Man, even though he's a bull, and you got to respect him, he is just a big cuddle bug, and he loves to be scratched. He lets me brush him all the time. It's like one of my favorite things to do with him, and he definitely likes it. It looked like Joey Raone was a big fan as well. And just watching them for a couple of minutes here, I think my only real regret is the fact that I didn't get enough of them. And despite the fact that I bought four of them, I think I'm going to have some very disappointed animals because I don't have enough.
But let's go see how the calves and cows like them. Ah, son of a gun. It actually looks like we might have ourselves a Yep. definite side quest on our hands. What happened here, boys? Looks like the roof clear blew off. Oh man. You know, we've had like 50 60 mph winds over the last day and I guess some point last night, the roof of the goat house blew off. I don't think the goats really care all that much cuz they sleep down there. But if I want to keep that structure protected, I'm going to have to put that up pretty quickly. You know, it's funny. I actually had plans to install something else on the goat house today, which I don't know. Maybe we can do both of them at the same time, and that could be just a little bit of fun. Okay, boys, calm down. I'm going to need you on good behavior as I open up your yard for some construction. Okay, hang on. I'm opening up your gate, but I have these alalfa pellets that'll keep them from wandering. Hey, don't step on the roof, please. Come on. Come on, boys. Come on. Come with me. Come on. I'm going to feed you some alalfa. You love alalfa. I know you fellas. Here, put some in here. Lauren, here. I'm going to have you eat from the bucket so you don't push everybody out of the way. Yeah, Lauren can be kind of pushy and selfish. I don't know. Actually, I think what I need to do is get or build one of those like longer goat feeders so everybody can sit at it happily or is the way they sometimes fight over their food. But with the goats now distracted, let's go into part one of our plan.
All right. I don't know. What do you guys think? Just about here. Do I want to put it lower? Like down on this post? That feels too low. Any suggestions down in the comments? Not that I'm going to hear them before I finish this job. I mean, since they're goats, maybe I only do just one and I do it like here, actually. Yeah, I like that idea. I mean, goats don't put nearly as much force as the cattle. I think this should be okay. Okay, I think that's good. All right, with the goats still distracted by their food, I'm going to now take a crack at doing the second part of this repair today. Sorry, boys. Don't mean to spook you. I know it's a little bit scary, but this is necessary. We're going to get this fixed in a GIF. Or is it fixed in a gif? So, I had to go back to the barn to get this guy right here just to use that on the roofing screws. And when I did, it looks like the goats escaped. But luckily, we have the goat boss keeping things in check and keeping the goats from running around and running crazy. Good job, Abby Dog. I am really proud of you. Can you help me get the goats back in? Come on. Yep. Yep. Get them back in. Get them back in. Yeah. Hey, you. I'm talking to you guys. Come on. Yeah. Abby will drive them in as I request it. Come on, Abs. Get them in. Get them in. Come on. Get them in. Even though the goats really don't like Abby.
High winds are like the worst time to have to do roofing repairs, just for the record. But they're often times the times that you need to do roofing repairs. Son of a gun. And yes, if the cameras weren't recording, I probably wouldn't have said gun. No. Stay, stay, stay. Well, that wasn't good. We still have like 40 mph winds, so I do not think I'm going to be able to do this repair today, which kind of sucks. I think I'm going to have to wait at least either later today or tomorrow for when all the wind dies down. This is my own darn fault, too, because I actually saw it flapping a little bit. Like it seemed like one of the corners had come up just a tad yesterday evening when I was doing the night chores. I was like, "Oh, I'll tackle that tomorrow morning." If I had just done it then, I wouldn't be in this situation. So, this is entirely my fault. There really is nothing quite like regretting the things that you should have done after the fact when it's too late. Let's go. Heat. Heat. Oh my gosh, you guys. I was just out here about walking out to the cattle. You'll never guess what I just saw Tmicus doing. I mean, Tmicus doesn't seem as enthusiastic as Macho Man or Joey Raone, but he does seem kind of interested in it. So, maybe this isn't a total bust. And maybe I just kind of spooked him with all the chaos from the roof. So, we'll have to see. Let's continue on down that way.
And we're going to go check on the cattle. Uh-oh. Do you guys see what Baby Bee is doing over there? How she's rubbing up against the fence? That is actually the thing that motivated me to buy these brushes. You see, my cattle have been beating up my fencing so far this winter. And it's been one of the problems I've had with this winter yard that I haven't really liked very much. And so, I bought these to actually prevent them from doing what they're doing right now. Like, when the summer comes, I'm going to have to actually do some major fence repairs for pretty much this whole area because they've been beating the heck out of it. And it's totally my fault, but I don't love how they are putting some serious mileage on this fencing. Excuse me, Audrey. Can you step away, please? I need to get in here. Now, because I want to reduce the amount of mileage they put on the fences themselves, I'm actually not going to drill them to the fence post like you might expect me to do. I actually have what I think is a better plan. You see, I got some industrial strength zip ties and I have this old hay feeder that I never use because they beat it up too much. And so, with the zip ties already threaded through, I'm going to see if I can just attach this just like so. Okay, I have now securely fastened these. I don't think they're going anywhere significantly. And it looks like we already have a couple of curious test subjects, including Audrey, who is our boss cow and does look very, very pregnant. Hey, Audrey, you want to give this a shot? No. Oh dear, the wind actually just blew over the camera. That was really bad. O. Yeah, it is such a windy day. I don't feel like that can be underscored. All right, baby be looks like she wants to test it out. All right, baby B. You going to give it a shot? Let's see what you got. Yeah, that one's getting your little chinny chin chin. Now we got Bonnie McMurray giving it a shot and Baby Bee's at it for some more, too. But they both seem to like it a lot. I'm just going to let a camera run for a little bit and let's see how they do and I'll check back in in a couple minutes.
3 hours later. All right, and we're back. It has been kind of a crazy windy day today. Like I have not wanted to spend much time outside. So, it's like I don't know about 3:00 in the afternoon now. Like even the dogs don't seem like they're out in their usual post. And it would appear that they have been taking a nap this afternoon, which they're definitely allowed to do. How you doing, Meie Pie? Good to see you. Good to see you, sweetie. Oh, hey buddy. All right, pal. I just decided to come out here to pump water for the cattle so that they have fresh water for the night. What we're going to do is get their water pump going and we'll go check on the cattle and see how they're doing and see what ended up happening to their brushes. Yeah, the weather has been quite hostile today. And no, I didn't try to install the goat roof because I think I might kill myself if I'm not careful and like slice myself with that roofing panel. That sheet metal is no joke and it can really cut hard. Keep falling in the snow. You can see there's still I don't know. I'd say there's probably somewhere between 12 and 18 inches of snow still on the ground, but because we've had so many melts over the last couple of days, it's no longer solid to walk on. Come on, dogs. You want to go inside? Whoop. Come on, Topes. Whoop. So, you can see the water is flowing in to refill the trough. You'll also notice it looks like they've eaten most of their hay. So, I'll give them some fresh hay. Abby apparently has to pee. And it looks like the brushes are still intact and in good shape. So, they haven't destroyed anything. I'm actually very curious to see what footage this camera right here captured. So, let's take a look, shall we?
My shaggy cows love to chill. Cows getting itchy. Know the drill. When the itch attacks, here's what they do. Shaggy cows love brushes, no doubt. Scratch it, rub it, move it out. Brush from the head to the hoof. Feeling so fly, that's the truth. It's a boine rush. Keeping it plush. Scrub a dub style. Cows love that brush. Shaggy cows love brushes, you know. Grooving and moving. Watch them go, go, go, go, go. Shaggy cows love brushes for real. Brushing that fur, loving how it feels. Shaggy cows. Shaggy. Well, yeah, it clearly looks like the girls are enjoying their new toy. You can actually see Betty Rubble is actually getting a good scratch in. She just walked over while I was watching the video and so yeah, they're looking really happy with it. How's it going, sweetie pie? Hi. She's warming up to me. I actually think I should start bringing the brush out and trying to work with her more regularly. She is definitely enjoying the brushing and she also seems very willing to let me brush her, too. So, I think I just need to work on her training and she should be pretty good. You know, I had mentioned earlier that the girls were really beating up the fencing. Just to give you a closer look at it, like you can see all these hair clumps are all there. This woven wire fence is all bent in. They actually broke the electric fencing because when the ground gets really cold and freezes solid, uh, it actually doesn't ground out as well and it doesn't carry a charge. And so they started rubbing up against all of this and they pretty much just ripped out all the electrical that I used to have up here. And so, uh, that's going to have to be a spring repair I make in the next month or two once the ground unfreezes and the snow thaws out and melts. But yeah, it does seem like Hey, particularly with both of the calves now, they seem pretty gosh darn happy with it. How's it going, Belle? Do you like that, too? You like the scratchy? You want to say hi to me? See, Belle is a little bit more skittish than her sister. Oh, there you go. That's contact. That's an initial start. Let you keep scratching away at this guy. Hi, baby B. Hi. Yes. You are the friendliest of the calves. Actually, she's not a calf. She's a heer. So, she's going to be with the breeding herd this spring. And so, both her and Alice B. Toolless will be potentially getting their first calves. I don't know, probably next April, next May. And I actually think these girls deserve some fresh hay. So, let's get feeding. Abington decided to stay and supervise the hay feeding. Toby decided to follow me. Now Toby wants to come back in. Even the dogs have their respective jobs when I feed the hay. How's it going there, boss cow? Getting some hay to yourself? My my. Would you look at her? She is looking pregnant. Hi, baby bee. Oh, you want your own hay? Okay. Yeah, I know. I'm kind of a little bit my own worst enemy as I feed them up against the fence, but I don't know. I'm kind of stuck in this position for this year. I'm actually working on some plans for where to keep the animals next year. And I think it's going to be actually a little bit different than what I'm doing this year. I shouldn't say I think. I know it's going to be a bit different than what I'm doing this year. And uh yeah, I'm actually kind of excited to show you guys what it ends up looking like. But that's going to be a big part of my work this summer in terms of the big project because I'm starting to think the big project, like the biggest project is going to involve that barn back there. But there's going to be plenty of time to talk about that one really soon. Thanks for watching everybody.
