Born in a Snow Storm: First Calf of 2025

Oh boy, you guys. I was just out here feeding hay for the cattle and I've made an amazing discovery. Would you look at that? It's the first calf of the year. I'm so excited. And today's video is sponsored by Encogni. I'm going to go park the tractor and go get my camera and let's go find out what we got. Yeah, I wasn't even remotely expecting this to happen today, but here we are. And so, we're going to just sneak in here and check out the calf. You know, the upside of feeding everybody hay is it's a good distraction for the rest of the herd. So, I can kind of slip in here without the cows paying too much attention to me. Unfortunately, guys, I don't think it's a good idea to bring you with me today. Stay put. Stay put. Don't worry, I'll be back for you in a little bit, Abs. And you'll eventually meet the calf, just not right this second. I find that sometimes having the calf around can make for a lot more action than I might like. You can see our little calf right there. First thing I need to do is prep a syringe. So, when I had those calves that died last year, based on the autopsy, the vets's best guess of why they died was they actually had a selenium deficiency. And so, the very first thing I want to do is actually give this little calf dosing of selenium. Okay, so this is locked and loaded. Shoot. Abby dog. So Abby dog got kind of annoyed that she was left out and so she got all the cattle riled up and now they're kind of running around like crazy and I want to be very very careful. I don't want to get in the middle. Like the thing you got to recognize is even though my cattle are very gentle and docile and pretty familiar with me and pretty well trained. You know, one of the most dangerous things you can have is a cow like a mama cow think that her newborn calf is threatened. And so we just got to be significantly careful. And actually you can see it here. All the herd is now on full alert. I think I'm actually going to go put Abby away. I'll be right back.

Okay, and we're back. So, it looks like the mom I wasn't quite who sure who the mom was at first. I thought it might be Amanda Hugging Kiss, but no, it looks like the mom is Anna Green Gables. What's actually really interesting about Anna Green Gables is she was the mother of the first calf ever born on the farm. She is the mother of Belinda Carile. And then last year, she actually gave birth to little baby Elliot, who was the first calf born on the farm. And sadly, he's one of the two calves we lost last year. So that's why it's actually really important for me to give this shot to really make sure that that baby grows up and does well. Unfortunately, you can see there's kind of like a lot of security going on right now. I've got some of the Charlays here guarding the perimeter. Abby snuck around the back and then she started to get everybody all worked up and now the whole herd is on full alert. But I do want to get this shot in before nightfall because it's important to get it in them in the first 24 hours or so so they can get the maximum effect. It's vitamin E and selenium mostly. I think in order to pull this one off, I'm going to actually need to sneak around the perimeter. So, let's go.

And in case you guys are wondering, I parked Abby with the weird chickens in their kennel that they have. It's kind of what I often will use with Abby for like daycare, like if I need to lock her up for a few minutes while I'm doing something or opening a bunch of gates or some sort of thing like this. It's It's kind of the perfect way to do it. So, the trick is the most important thing I need to do is I need to give this calf the Boseie shot. If I can find out sex, that's a bonus. But honestly, that can wait even till tomorrow. The Boseie shot and the calf's health is actually the most important thing. And so that's what I'm going to have to do here. Luckily, she's really close to this panel. And so I can probably just slip my arm through and give it to her real quick. Got it. I did it. That was pretty smooth and easy. Unfortunately, yeah, she she just got up and now she's further away. I didn't get a good look at genitalia, so I don't know if I'm dealing with a boy or a girl. As I'm looking and just watching from afar, one thing I am noticing is it does seem like this little baby is a girl. I think I got like the quickest of glimpses at it just as it like lifted its tail. But I haven't seen it go to the bathroom and so I just don't know for sure. The really good news is Anna Green Gable, who's the calf's mom, is an outstanding mom. You can even see really good mom instincts as she's interacting with the calf here. And then the other kind of nice and reassuring thing is how the rest of the fold interacts with the little one too. You can see they're very protective. You know, they got very protective about me. They got extremely protective when Abby came in because Abby will try to play with calves. That's one of the things that still just doesn't make her a good dog just to leave completely unsupervised with the cattle. They are on high alert, but they're being so gentle and protective of that little one. It's it's really nice to see. Even last year's calves like Betty Rubble and Belle, you can see them saying hello, giving a few licks and trying to be friends with actually an animal that is their halfsister. So all of these calves that are going to be born this year are the offspring of Macho Man. For example, Betty Rubble, who's this calf that you're seeing right here, she is the daughter of Macho Man. And so even though she has a different mom, she's actually half siblings with this new calf. I'm going to call this mission accomplished even though I didn't find out the sex. I got the Boseie shot. Like the really good news is that calf was completely dry. So I'm going to guess it was born at least 2 or 3 hours ago. Mama dried her off and cleaned her off really good. It's going to get down to I think the low is supposed to be like 28 tonight, but we might get a little bit of snow. But since it's completely dry, I'm actually not very worried about it. I've been maintaining a whole plan of if I needed to move a mama and a calf out of there and into somewhere sheltered and dry, I could. It wasn't going to be easy, but I could do it. Based on everything I saw with the health of the calf, it's up moving around. It's drinking milk. It's completely dry. And so, I'm going to leave mama and baby out there with the rest of the herd tonight.

And while we wait for the morning, it's probably the perfect time to tell you about today's video sponsor, Incogn. You know, I don't know about you guys, but I get so many spam text messages, like these stupid text messages from unknown numbers telling me to click on the link and I can get my, you know, UPS package or there's a problem with my Netflix account or I need to order something on Amazon. Like in this day and age, I think we are all plagued by a problem similar to that. And you know, you start to wonder like why do they have your number? How is your number out there? And the truth of the matter is a lot of it comes through data brokers that are taking your information from like say some sort of product you ordered or like a discount card that you have and then they're selling it out on exchanges and then spammers and scammers are taking that information and that's how they're using it to contact you. And while data breaches and data brokers in general are a huge part of the problem, one of the biggest issues out there are people search sites that happen here in the United States. Anybody with some curiosity in your name could go out there and find all sorts of information on you and there ain't nothing you can do about it. Well, that's actually not entirely true because today's video sponsor, Incogn. You see, the way it works is when you sign up for an incogn, they will take your information and they'll go out to all those people search sites and a bunch of data brokers and they will basically take your information down, protect it, and protect you. And then as your membership continues, Incogn will continue to go out there on a regular basis looking to see if there's any information that gets put out there or any updates that happen. And they'll continue to put out these takedown requests automatically. So you don't even have to think about it or worry about it. Incogn has you covered. And I know ever since I signed up for Incogn, my spam text numbers have plummeted. And now the only people who contact me are the people who are trying to get in touch with me because I probably forgot to do something, which that's much more of a me problem than an incogn. I'm working on it. If you want to try Incogn yourself, use my offer code shaw. Give it a whirl and I think you're going to love the world of difference that you see.

So, what's your review of the snow there, Abby Dog? Huh? I don't know. It looks like we got I'm going to guess about five inches or so overnight. We'll do an official measurement just in a little bit. And yes, we will scratch Eby's belly because she deserves love. Good girl. Good morning to Mr. Toby Dog, too. Hi. And as happy as I am to see these guys, the real creature I want to go check on is our brand new little calf and see how she I think it's a she how she's doing. You know, it's funny. Last night, I kept looking at the footage I shot yesterday and was like zooming in and trying to enhance and trying to get the best possible view of it all to see what she looked like and see if I could determine sex. And uh I don't know. I didn't do too well. All right, let's see if we can find the little one inside, guys. Come on. Got a slushy but drinkable water trough. We got ourselves a Bonnie McMurray over here. Good morning to you, Audrey. How are you doing? Good morning, Belinda Carile. Well, I'm looking for your new sibling. Have you seen her? Uh-oh. Now I'm worried. I see the mama Ann right there. Hey, Annie. Where's the calf? Happy dog. Where's the calf? Do you see her? Oh, there she is. She's taking a nap right in the hay. She actually found a nice cozy spot to cuddle up in. She looks like she's doing pretty good. That's a good sign. I think I would have really panicked in previous years and been like, "Oh no, I should intervene. I should do something different." But honestly, one of the things I've learned the most about taking care of these animals is they're kind of built for this weather and they're pretty comfortable with the rugged climate and as long as you're confident in the quality of the mom and I've seen Ann do a really good job over the years, things will be okay. And so I know folks might see snow be like, "Oh, you should intervene." I I'm since it's like it's warm. It's like 31° or so out right now. It's a little bit wet, which is not great. I I think I think the cap is going to be okay. Again, this is me kind of trying to reassure myself and you all at the same time. Now, unfortunately, it's a little tough to get in there and get a better perspective. Excuse me, Betty White. Can I get in there? Can I get in there? Can I get you out of there? How's it going, Annie? We're being watchful for your little one. Don't worry. Like, I worry if I go for her. I'm still going to go with the best guess being a girl right now. But if I go in there, I'm worried that mom might get worked up. Good job. Oh yeah, that's a girl. Well, that's a good sign. We got ourselves a little girl. So, she's going to need a bee name. Oh, look at her. She's adorable. Mom's doing a good job taking care of her. Everybody's doing good, actually. Everybody's nice and chill. This is really good to see. Let's see if we can get her drinking the milk. I saw her drink a little bit last night, really briefly, so I'm not concerned. I'd love to see her drink as much as she can from her mama. Looks like maybe she just wants to get licked up. Got to admit, I'm really impressed with Ann. She She's always the first to mom. I mean, you know, she had one year where she wasn't pregnant because I didn't have a bull on the farm, but other than that, she's always produced the first calf of the season. And I don't know, it's just really joy making to see this go down. All right, we're going to keep letting them do their mom and daughter thing. And yeah, here's the big sister. And the big sister, I'm really expecting a calf very soon. Belinda Carile, you were the first calf born on the farm. And your calf in theory would be the first of the third generation, the first CNAME birth. I would really like to see that. Yes. And just as a refresher for folks who are going to want to suggest names because I got to talk to Allison and we'll figure it out. But the way we name our cattle is all of the male calves born on the farm get names of dead rock stars because we have to remind ourselves that their lives are going to be short. All of the females, if they're a first generation cow that's been brought to the farm, they get a a name like Audrey here. If they're a second generation, they get a B name, like Bonnie McMurray, who you see rubbing up against the fence. And so that's why Belinda's daughter would get a C name. Ann of Green Gables's daughter gets a B name. And so if you have B names for the calf born before the blizzard, please suggest them down below.

Now, if you guys will come with me, we've got other farm chores to do. Let's go check on the boys. You know, not the boys, but the boys. Good morning, Lauren. How you doing, buddy? How's my Lauras here? We'll open this up for you, but we'll also give you some fresh hay right over here. You guys were like on easy street. You were starting to be able to wander around and eat all sorts of grasses. You were really enjoying things. There were shrubs coming up. I was actually even planning for this weekend in a video to show what I'm going to do in terms of moving them around the farm and how I do it and actually move them for their first area for groundskeeping. But unfortunately, this is not conducive to that. And so for right now, these boys are going to be confined to their typical paddic and not too much more. Like I'm gonna actually let them like wander around out here because there's no reason to prevent them from going anywhere. Like I just mean that there's absolutely no point trying to set up like some wireless netting and like I don't know, move them over to an edge of a fence because like number one, the snow will ground out the fencing. And then number two, there's really nothing for them to eat. But don't worry, Lney. Very soon. Very soon. All right, Toby Dog. Let's go take care of your birds. Huh? I don't know if you guys have noticed yet, but it is Slytherin season for sure. All right, in we go. Oh my gosh, Abby snuck in here to take a duty. In terms of problems to have, I'll take that one over many others I could have with her right now. All right, not all at once here. Come on. We're feeding you guys inside today. Come on. Hey, look. It's Bean the Duck. I don't if you guys saw it last night, but she kind of got herself into some trouble, but I've gotten into the habit of, you know, whenever I come out here for a chore check to check on her. I actually have a theory that her blindness might actually be getting worse cuz she used to get around a lot better than she has been lately. I'm finding that she's having more and more mishaps. I don't know exactly what the cause of that is. I'm not like direly worried, but it does have me wondering if I should change things up for her just a little bit as I make her plans for the summer. Like I really don't want a rescue duck or like a duck I have to keep separate. Somebody's down in the comments like begging for a blind duck. Maybe message me. I don't know. I'm I'm just talking out loud. It's okay, Beanie. The food's inside today. Food's inside. All right, let's see what we got for eggs this morning. First two chicken eggs of the day. I think I might make those my breakfast. I pretty much always have like a late breakfast every day and I usually like always to just select the freshest eggs and since these were just laid this morning, I feel like that's the one to pick. Oh no, I was just trying to do an egg hunt. It looks like this bird just died. I don't know what happened to her. That just completely ruins a morning. That sucks. I I I don't know. Whenever this happens, particularly while I'm shooting a video, I don't know how to react. It's one of my older Bard rock hens. I don't
